They think most of these people are taking advantage of other people making the scam seem like a business. But networking is not a scam. It is just a tool to be used to widen your horizons and meet a lot of people, get referrals and advertise your business without the cost of advertising.

There are ways to maximize networking and gain more opportunities. One way is to know more people. Staying acquainted with people you already know is not enough. You must exert efforts to get to know more people and learn about them to see if you might have potential business opportunities with them. Always keep in mind that being genuine will help you to build trusting relationships with people. If people trust you, it is more likely that they will share with you valuable information.

Always follow up to establish a relationship with your new contacts. Invite them for lunch or coffee talk so you can exchange networking tips with each other. Learn some basic human psychology. People help those they like, so to make them like you and show them that you are genuinely happy for their success.

Set a solid goal and stick to it. Your goal will help you to design your path towards success. This will help you choose the right people that you can ask for help. Make a goal that you truly believe in and something that holds your interests. Have a clear understanding of what you are doing and why you are doing it. The very thought of networking can be unpleasant or intimidating to some people. However the ability to connect with others and make a positive impression is not only important for your career, but it can also be fun and exciting if approached with the right attitude.

Forget about what took place last year. This is a new year to do new things that will help you grow not only in your profession but also personally.

Starting the New Year off on the right foot by building relationships can lead to new business or new contacts that can last a lifetime. Networking is about following up, building trust and longevity.

These are simple five tips for networking in the New Year:

  1. Be charming and approachable – There is a saying that “People do business with people they know, like and trust” So when you have the opportunity to connect, be likable. Try being yourself.
  2. Networking should not be a one-sided coin – You need to be a resource to others. Listen to their needs. You never know how you can help someone so ask open-ended questions and listen to what they have to say. If you approach networking as a way of helping others rather than what you get out of it, you will make lasting connections. Besides giving is receiving.
  3. Start with a base hit – Just like anything worth having relationships take time to build. You will need to be respectful and bond over time. You don’t want to come across as being insincere or pushy. I have found it better to invest a little time and effort with few connections instead of jumping from guest to guest. It is not about how many relationships you have instead it is the quality of the relationship that matters.
  4. Deal with the rejections – Don’t take it personal if your contacts don’t respond. If you follow up and don’t get a response, maybe the person is not interested or extremely busy. Being persistent is okay to a point, but if you don’t get any response just move on.
  5. Nurture the relationship – The best correspondence is done on purpose. Make it a point to follow up with a brief email with personality. Reach out to new contacts on a regular basis by recognizing their achievements or just to offer assistance when appropriate. Just remember that all good relationships require attention. (more…)
